October is National Disability Employment Month

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is recognized each October to highlight the workforce contributions of people with disabilities.

Facts:

• Only 20.6% of the labor force with disabilities were employed.
• 59% of people with hearing impairments were employed
• 41% of people with visual disabilities were employed
• 16% of people with a severe disability worked full-time.

What you can do in your organization to recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

• Train front-line staff on the facts.
• Feature information on National Disability Employment Awareness Month in your organization's newsletter.
• Reach out to local media.
• Proactively recruit people with disabilities.
• Review your company's policy and procedures.
• Conduct a training for supervisors on understanding their role in fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
• Participate in Disability Mentoring Day.
• Conduct a training on disability history.

WORLD CEREBAL PALSY DAY- OCTOBER 2, 2013

Facts:

• Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to make and maintain balance and posture.
• The most common type of CP is spastic CP. This type affects about 80% of people with cerebral palsy.
• There are more boys born with cerebral palsy than girls (for every 100 girls there are 135 boys).
• About one-half of children born with CP are born prematurely.
• Stroke in a baby or child less than the age of 3 results in CP.
• One in nine people with CP have features of autism.
• Six of 10 people with CP have normal or superior intelligence.
• One in four children with CP cannot feed themselves.
• Research into the cure, prevention and treatment of CP receives less than 0.05 percent of the total NIH budget.

World Cerebral Palsy Day began in 2012 by Cerebral Palsy Alliance in Australia and United Cerebral Palsy in the United States. Today, the project is supported by organizations in over 30 countries from Australia to Zambia.
World CP Day is a global innovation project. The goal is to change the World for people living with cerebral palsy and their families.
Each year, people with cerebral palsy and their families and supporters, post an idea for something that would change their world. People have the opportunity to present their idea via video or text and post it on the World CP Day website from mid July to October 31st.

By December, all ideas are reviewed by an international panel including people with cerebral palsy. Three of the ideas are placed on a shortlist. Any inventor/researcher or creator is invited to create a design for one of the shortlist ideas. The winner will receive a prize of $50,000.

World CP Day

World CP Day will change the lives of people with cerebral palsy. The website, World CP Day is a forum for people with cerebral palsy to express what they need to make their life more independent or more rewarding. How does this work?

Post your ideas-From August 1- people with cerebral palsy, families, friends and professionals can post ideas about how they want to improve the quality of life of people with cerebral palsy. According to the website, these ideas could affect any aspects of the person's life including, mobility, communication or social connection. Post your ideas online as text or video. Each idea must only take 1 minute to read or watch.

Vote on ideas-From September 4, anyone can go online to review the ideas and vote for the ones that will have the greatest impact on people's lives.

Best Idea win- At the end of September, The World Cerebral Palsy Day Panel will review your votes and select the best ideas.

Making Ideas A Reality-  In November, social activist, researchers, inventors and innovators are invited to go online and propose how they would make these ideas a reality.

Launch- These products will be launched by the next World CP Day, September, 2012
